What is bohemian style?

To define bohemian style is not easy, it is like defining freedom.  And perhaps the definition of bohemian style is just that: freedom.

In terms of fashion bohemian style is maxi skirts and dresses, easy to wear flowing clothes in whatever colours you choose.  There is an overlap point with hippie style where handmade crochet tops and skirts which have a retro feel also have a distinctive bohemian style.

Bohemian style also covers home decor.  Which again has a real looseness and freedom to it.  It is a really eclectic style which again has a real looseness and freedom to it.  Often bohemian style decor features vintage and handmade items which give a real sense of life a history to a room.  Patterns which create a strong bohemian style are North African like Moroccan and Central Asian, for example Indian textiles.  This is frequently made up of earthy colours and warm metallics like gold and bronze for a real bohemian chic style.  Depending on the space you have be careful not to make the room feel too heavy with the use of these rich patterns and tones.

Bohemian style jewelry follows along these same lines, often pieces are handmade or vintage and feature bright colours and warm toned metals.  And again the style is quite eclectic often wearing lots of jewellery at once.  Bohemian style necklaces can be extra long or chunky and the same rule applies to bohemian style earrings.  However, again there is an overlap with hippie style where woven or macrame bracelets and natural materials can be worn in a more subtle way.

What is bohemian fashion style?

Bohemian fashion style is a blend of handmade, vintage, hippie and ethnic or tribal design.  Fashion bohemian style is eclectic, warm, soft, easy to wear and flowing sometimes even romantic.

It is possible to think of bohemian fashions as beach fashions or festival fashions and as we are heading into the summer just now now is the perfect time to get into bohemian fashions.

Bohemian Fashion Tips:

  • The maxi skirt: cool, long and flowing and perfect in whatever colour you choose.
  • The vintage (or vintage style) blouse: freedom is the key here.  This works if you choose a white lace 1920’s style blouse or a flamboyant, 1960’s inspired tie-dyed top.
  • The head scarf: Again very versatile, any colour or pattern.  I like a crocheted one myself.
  • Wedges: great for summer, preferable with strap detailing.
  • The bangle: or preferably a stack of them, a mixture of knotted or macrame bracelets and brass bangles with beads and charms.
